There isn’t one fixed cost for opening a private clinic in India.
A small consultation-based practice in an existing space can require a very different investment from a larger clinic with expensive equipment, multiple staff members and extensive interiors.
Instead of asking only, “How much money do I need?”, it is more useful to ask:
What will my clinic cost to open, what will it cost to run, and how many patients will I need?
Start With the Five Main Cost Areas
Your exact numbers will vary, but most new clinic owners need to think about several broad categories.
1. Premises
This can include:
- Security deposit
- Rent
- Basic renovation
- Signage
- Furniture
- Electrical and interior work
Location can have a major effect on both your initial and ongoing costs.
2. Clinical Equipment
Your requirements depend heavily on your specialty.
A consultation-focused practice may have a relatively simple equipment requirement, while specialties and dental practices can require significantly more specialized equipment. Separate essential equipment from items that can wait until the practice generates revenue.
3. Staff
Consider the cost of:
- Receptionist or front-desk staff
- Clinical assistants where required
- Housekeeping
- Other support staff
Don’t calculate only the salary. Include other recurring employment-related costs that apply to your setup.
4. Consumables and Administration
Depending on your practice, recurring expenses may include:
- Medical or dental consumables
- Stationery
- Cleaning supplies
- Communication expenses
- Software
- Waste management
- Professional and administrative services
5. Patient Acquisition and Visibility
A clinic also needs to be discoverable. Your budget may include signage, local awareness activities, photography, digital presence and other appropriate promotional activities. You don’t necessarily need an expensive marketing agency at the beginning. Start by making the fundamentals work.
Opening Cost Is Only Half the Calculation

This is where many new clinic owners can make a mistake. Suppose your clinic costs ₹X to set up. That tells you how much capital you need initially. It doesn’t tell you how many patients you need each month to operate sustainably. For that, calculate your recurring monthly expenses.
Then estimate: Average revenue per consultation and Approximate number of consultations required to cover monthly operating costs. This gives you a basic break-even target.
Then Ask: How Will I Reach That Patient Volume?
This is where clinic economics and patient acquisition meet. If your numbers tell you that you need a certain number of consultations each month, you need a system for getting potential patients from:
Local search → Enquiry → Booking → Appointment → Consultation
That’s why simply asking how to increase patient volume isn’t enough. You need to understand which parts of the patient journey are creating or losing opportunities.
For a new clinic, start with the basics:
- Be visible on Google
- Make your contact information easy to find
- Respond professionally to enquiries
- Make appointment booking simple
- Use reminders
- Build genuine reviews
- Track your appointments and cancellations
- Monitor your patient and financial numbers
Don’t Spend Everything Before You Open
A common temptation is to put too much money into interiors, equipment or technology before the clinic has established demand. Separate your spending into: Essential before opening and Useful once the clinic grows
This protects your available cash and gives you room to handle the early months of operation.
Track Your Numbers After Opening

Your initial calculation is only a starting point. Once the clinic is operating, track:
- Number of enquiries
- Number of appointments booked
- Number of completed consultations
- Cancellations
- Missed appointments
- New vs returning patients
- Average revenue per consultation
- Monthly operating costs
This helps you identify whether the problem is insufficient enquiries, poor conversion, missed appointments or patient retention.
For example, if enquiries are high but bookings are low, your receptionist workflow may need attention. If bookings are high but completed visits are low, reminders and follow-up may be the issue.
Prepare Before You Spend
If you’re planning to open a private clinic, our free Clinic Launch Checklist can help you work through the operational basics before opening day.
And if you want ready-to-use resources rather than building each system yourself, the Doctor’s Clinic Launch Kit includes a clinic break-even calculator along with Google and WhatsApp setup guides, receptionist scripts, appointment tracking resources, patient documentation templates and reminder workflows.
Knowing your opening cost matters. Knowing how the clinic will operate after opening matters even more.
